Residents in Tyrrell, Washington and Martin counties will be able to take advantage of drive-through flu vaccine clinics next week. These clinics have been well received in years past. “We have been told that this is the easiest way to be vaccinated. People love not having to get out of their car,” stated Wes Gray, MTW District Health director.

On Tuesday, October 10, MTW staff will be at the Plymouth Fire Department, located at 775 US Highway 64. Vaccines will be available in Martin County on Wednesday, October 11 at the EJ Hayes Alumni Center at 201 Andrews Street in Williamston and on Thursday, October 12 at the MTW Dental Clinic in Columbia, which is located at 1208 Us Highway 64 East. All three clinics will be held from 3 p.m. until 6 p.m.

Regular dose, high dose and flu mist will be available on a first come, first serve basis. Those interested in participating are asked to bring their picture identification and insurance card or $35 if opting to self-pay.

According to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention website, even though flu is detected from January to December, the peak time when people experience flu symptoms is fall and winter months. This is thought to be because cooler temperatures often mean more time inside and in closer contact with others. Flu, or influenza, is a respiratory illness that is very contagious and infects the nose, throat and, oftentimes, the lungs.

“The best way to reduce your chances of getting the flu, is to be vaccinated,” stated a news release from MTW District Health. “Adopting good health habits all year long can also improve your chances of remaining ‘flu -free.’  These habits include avoiding close contact with those that are sick, staying home when you are sick, covering your nose and mouth when sneezing and coughing and washing your hands often.”

“We look forward to continuing to partner with Martin, Tyrrell and Washington county communities so that we can reduce the cases of flu,” stated Gray.
