Kill Devil Hills commissioners held a brief meeting in September to present lifesaving awards to two members of the Kill Devil Hills Police Department.

Officers Joey Delmonte and Austin Gray responded to a call on August 25 for a missing nonverbal autistic child. The child had wandered away from his vacation home. The officers quickly searched the area and spotted the child struggling in a nearby pond in the Bermuda Bay community. They, along with a private citizen, bravely entered the water and saved the child, averting a tragedy.

Commissioners presented awards and appreciation, along with the family, to officers Delmonte and Gray.

Also during the commissioners meeting, appointments were made to the planning board and the community appearance commission.

The meeting concluded with the approval by the board of a resolution and three resolutions affecting the community: the National Flood Insurance Reauthorization and Reform Act of 2023 Resolution; Constitution Week Proclamation; Breast Cancer Awareness Month Proclamation; and Fire Prevention Week Proclamation.
