Rex proudly served his country as a United States Coast Guard member for twenty years. In 1973, he retired as Boatswain’s Mate Senior Chief Petty Officer and returned home to Kitty Hawk, NC with the love of his life, four children, and his mother-in-law. He continued to serve his community as a deputy with the Dare County Sheriff’s Office and with Dare County EMS. He was a hard worker and very much lived his life with great integrity, honesty, and drive to always do his best, treat people with love and respect, and always be early! If you were right on time in Dad’s book, you were late. You had better be fifteen minutes early.

He will be remembered for his dedication and love for his family. Rex will be dearly missed by his loved ones. He is survived by his beloved wife of 64 years, Betty Lou Henley; and children, Leslie Henley, Deborah Scarborough (Jimmy), and David Henley (Sheri). Rex’s memory will also be treasured by his grandchildren, Shawn, Nick, Jamie, David “Bubba”, Joshua, James, Sarah, Dawn, Adam, and Alan; great-grandchildren, Willow, Marley, Noah, Nevaeh, Dylon, Hutner, Holden, Hudson, Zephyr Osage, Nadia, and David; and his nephew Gary Henley (Cindi) of Maryland.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Leslie James Henley and Oriental D. Henley; his son, Leslie Rex Henley Jr.; brother, Gilbert Lee Henley; grandson, James Scarborough; and son-in-law, Nick Ward.

The family would like to thank the nurses and staff at The Outer Banks Hospital for the beautiful care shown for Rex during his final days. The family would also like to express their heartfelt gratitude to Rex’s wonderful pastors, friends, and family for all their loving support.

At this time, there will be a private family burial in Austin Cemetery due to family illness. A Celebration of Rex’s life will be held at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial donations be made to the Outer Banks Dementia Friendly Coalition.
