Bea Basnight takes seat on Dare Board of Commissioners

The Dare County Board of Commissioners welcomed a new colleague on Monday, December 4, 2023.

Board Chairman Robert L. Woodard Sr. first read a letter from Browny Douglas, the chair of the Dare County Republican Party. The letter stated that the party’s executive committee recommended Bea Basnight for the vacant seat on the board. The vacancy was occasioned by the death of commissioner Jim Tobin.

The board unanimously accepted the recommendation. Basnight was sworn into office by board clerk Skyler Foley. Kennedy Basnight Moran held the Bible and the oath was witnessed by Crew Basnight Moran. Basnight took her seat.

On the first meeting in December, the board elects a chairman and vice chairman.

Foley asked for nominations for chairman. Commissioner Rob Ross nominated Woodard, who was elected unanimously. Woodard then asked for nominations for vice chairman. Commissioner Ervin Bateman nominated Wally Overman, who was elected unanimously.

Both Woodard and Overman have served the past year as chairman and vice chairman.
