The Oak Trail Solar project in Moyock joined with the Currituck Education Foundation and Currituck Chamber of Commerce to announce an annual scholarship to support training for county fire and EMS personnel.

The Wilson Snowden Scholarship is named in honor of Wilson Snowden, who died earlier this year. A beloved community member, Snowden was a former chair of the Currituck County Commission, founding member and Chief of the Crawford Township Fire Department, a long-time Currituck Ruritan and charter member of the Currituck Wildlife Guild.

The scholarship will be managed by the Currituck Education Foundation and will be used to support future training efforts to ensure county fire and EMS workers can continually train and remain on the cutting edge of public safety practices.

“I know Wilson would be pleased to know that his legacy as a first responder will continue for future generations,” said Josh Bass, vice chair of the Currituck Education Foundation. “Our first responders do so much for the community. I know we are all glad to give back to this group of dedicated individuals who keep us all safe.”

Oak Trail Solar is a 100-megawatt solar energy facility located along Puddin Ridge Rd. and Cooper Garrett Rd. in Currituck County. The clean energy project began operating in July 2023 and is committed to supporting community projects and initiatives that benefit the local area.

A check presentation ceremony was held at the Crawford Township Volunteer Fire Department headquarters in December. Representatives from the Currituck Education Foundation, Currituck Chamber of Commerce, College of The Albemarle and Crawford Township Volunteer Fire joined Barbara Snowden and her daughter Elizabeth Hayford in kicking off the scholarship.
