May 1, 1951 – December 31, 2023

Manteo, NC – Timothy Frank White, 72, of Manteo, NC, died on Sunday, December 31, 2023, at home after a long, hard-fought battle with cancer. He was born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, to the late John and Mary White.

Tim graduated from North Hills High School in 1969, where he played basketball and baseball, later being inducted into the North Hills High School Hall of Fame. After a bout of mononucleosis his senior year of high school, Tim chose to attend Greenbrier Military Academy for a year to better define his basketball skills. From there, Tim attended the University of Arkansas and then Appalachian State, where he was coached by Press Maravich and became a second-team all-conference selection averaging 14 points a game.

Upon graduating from college with a degree in business, Tim worked for North Carolina Power and Kellogg Supply, but his love for sports called him back and he went to work for Sportsman’s World and BSN Sports selling sporting goods. Tim ran most of Roanoke Island’s youth baseball leagues and coached basketball at Manteo Middle and Manteo High Schools, where he was head coach from 1978 until 1982. He went on to referee volleyball, basketball, and football in addition to coaching his own children and many other youth in all county sports, impacting their lives forever by instilling lessons of hard work, sportsmanship, and perseverance.  In 2007, Tim became the Public Service Director for Dare County retiring in September 2023. Tim was one of the “true sportsmen” on the Outer Banks.

Tim was preceded in death by his parents, John and Mary White. He is survived by his wife, Marie Harris White; his children, David White and Ryan McLawhorn (Justin); and his grandchildren, Hadley, Bentley, Hudson, and Fisher. Also surviving are his two sisters, Kathy Berlingeri and Patti Rozick (Steve); three brothers, Dick White (Janet), Jack White (Debbie), and Mike White (Daria); and many nieces and nephews.

As deeply passionate as Tim was about sports, his first love was his family. His happiest times were spent on the field with his children and grandchildren. His greatest accomplishment was the title “Poppy.”

The family will receive friends and relatives for a viewing and visitation on Saturday, January 6, 2024, from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m. at Twiford Colony Chapel.
