Currituck County Schools has announced that Anita Rubino, a dedicated and passionate educator at Currituck County High School, has been selected as the 2024 Northeast Region Teacher of the Year.

“When Mrs. Rubino took center stage in the gym in what she believed was an opportunity to address the student body prior to the holidays and end-of-course exams, Mrs. Rubino solidified to every person in attendance exactly why she was worthy of the recognition awarded to her today,” stated a December 11 announcement from Currituck County Schools.

Rubino emphasized the importance of having that one significant person in your life who can completely change a young person’s trajectory. “If you don’t have that person, come see me. I will be that person for you. I will make time for you,” she told the student body. And she meant every single word.

Kimberly Jones, the current 2023 North Carolina Teacher of the Year, was a special guest who then made the surprise announcement at the school-wide assembly. Before revealing the true purpose of her visit, Jones led up to the unexpected announcement by reading descriptions of Rubino provided by parents and colleagues and ending with student sentiments expressed such as, “… kind, determined, charismatic, and an advocate. She puts all her heart into teaching, she sacrifices her time, and is quite simply the best teacher ever.”

Known for her exceptional ability to create an engaging learning environment and being an encourager for all, “Mrs. Rubino has inspired our school community since joining the district in January 2005,” stated the CCS announcement. “Before receiving today’s prestigious recognition, Mrs. Rubino was the Currituck County High School 2023-2024 Teacher of the Year and became Currituck County Schools’ nominee to the state upon being named the District Teacher of the Year last May.”

From the nine regional Teachers of the Year finalists, a state selection committee will announce one of the outstanding educators as the 2024 Burroughs Wellcome Fund North Carolina Teacher of the Year in the spring. “Currituck County Schools is honored to have Mrs. Rubino represent the Northeast region moving forward and forever grateful for her lasting impact on our hearts as part of the Currituck County Schools family,” stated the announcement.
