Dr. Mark Grossman of Roanoke Island Animal Clinic has reported on a bald eagle recently found and in need of medical attention.

The adult female had been seen hanging out in Wanchese for about a week prior to being brought to the clinic.

“She was seen flying erratically and finally landed inappropriately … and always had her head down. X-rays were taken and no gunshot or other signs of trauma were seen. Unfortunately, her blood levels were off the charts,” stated Grossman.

The eagle went on to Lou Browning in Avon for rehab and to receive heavy metal elation therapy, however the prognosis is still very guarded.

“Some people think the lead exposure comes from them eating the entrails of deer that were killed and cleaned in the field,” noted Grossman.
