The League of Women Voters of Dare County has announced a public program aimed at raising awareness about human trafficking, scheduled for Saturday, January 20, 2024 from 4 to 6 p.m. at Waveriders Coffee, Deli & Market in Nags Head.

The League Lunch & Learn Public Program: Human Trafficking will feature Stephanie Benton, resource coordinator at Beloved Haven in Elizabeth City. With more than 12 years of experience in juvenile court diversion programs in Virginia Beach and Chesapeake, Va., Benton will shed light on the issue of human trafficking specifically on the Outer Banks.

“Human trafficking and sexual exploitation affect our community, and the League encourages its members and the public to attend this eye-opening event,” stated an LWV news release. “Stephanie Benton will share stories that unveil the hidden crime occurring within our own neighborhoods. Human trafficking exploits society’s most vulnerable, using force, fraud, or coercion to trap victims into labor or commercial sexual exploitation.”
