First Flight High School wrestlers score NCC championship victory

The First Flight High School wrestling team continues to roll, winning the Northeastern Coastal Conference championship on Saturday, January 20, 2024. The Nighthawks finished with 255 team points, with Currituck second (214) and Northeastern (118.5) edging Pasquotank (118) for third. Manteo, Holmes, and Hertford rounded out the competition.

Of the 14 weight classes, First Flight had an impressive seven champions, including Gavin Hanks (120 pounds), Khalel Sibugan (126), Nathan Canning (150), Azrael Simpson (157), Kai Reece (175), Lucas Sumners (190) and Everest Oullette (HWT). Additionally, Skyla Simpson (120) placed first in the female division.

The NCC conference victory follows on the heels of the prior Saturday’s win at the Manteo duels, where the Nighthawks went 6-0, defeating Marshall (Va.), Manteo, West Cabarrus, Hickory (Va.), Hanover (Va.) and Green Run (Va.).

First Flight head coach Russell Kepler commented, “The lineup has really come together here toward the end of the season. The wrestlers have been training hard and it shows on the mat.” Added assistant coach Jay Hawes, “Our upcoming Wednesday home match with Currituck will be exciting. Then it’s on to Regionals and States in February.”
