The call about a missing person came to 911 a little after 11 p.m. on Tuesday, February 13, 2024. The caller said a person was missing for several hours.

Dare County Sheriff’s Office mobilized. A person search was launched. A canine search progressed. A request for assistance was sent to Rodanthe Station 50, Chicamacomico Banks Volunteer Fire and Rescue. Fifteen volunteers responded.

The U.S. Coast Guard was notified and responded around 2:30 to 3 a.m. with a helicopter search as far south as Buxton.

At 4:22 a.m., without success, the nighttime search was called off.

The search re-started at first light and again at noon on February 14. During the searches, the Atlantic Ocean beach was covered north from New Inlet in Pea Island National Wildlife Refuge and south to Avon. The missing person was not found.

Searchers gathered at 5 p.m., low tide, to resume the search.

A citizen deployed a drone and located a body in a marsh south of the North Beach Campground in Rodanthe. The notice came a little after 6 p.m. from Fire Chief Mike Daugherty with Chicamacomico Banks.

The Dare County Sheriff’s Office, the lead agency, continues the investigation. The body was recovered and transferred to the Medical Examiner in Greenville. At this time, the person’s identity is not being released.

Also assisting the Dare County Sheriff’s Office with the search were volunteers from Avon Volunteer Fire Department Station 46, who twice searched the beach from Avon to Salvo. Dare MedFlight during a test flight flew over Rodanthe as requested. The National Park Service deployed its drone around 1 p.m. and flew from Midgett Drive to Sea Haven Drive, for about 40 minutes, mostly over the ocean.
