Manteo, NC – Karen Whitehurst Wright, 69, of Manteo, NC passed away in the comfort of her home surrounded by her family on February 12, 2024.

Born in Norfolk, VA, she was the daughter of the late Ernest and Margaret Whitehurst.  Karen was a graduate of Great Bridge High School and Old Dominion University. She practiced dental hygiene in Great Bridge for 43 years before retiring in 2019. She was an active member of Great Bridge United Methodist Church before moving to Manteo with her husband in 2012.

Karen was a kind soul who always put others before herself. Those who knew her well will never forget her smile and contagious laugh. Karen was an avid reader and was a member of several book clubs over the years. Her family meant the world to her. She loved being a mom to her two daughters and absolutely adored her three grandsons. Her grandson Bennett can’t wait to take his brother and cousin on all the fun adventures that he loved doing with his KK to help keep her memory alive. Her family will cherish the memories they made while spending time together on the Croatan Sound.

She is survived by her husband of 49 years, Richard “Bubba” Wright; two daughters, Caitlin Wright and her fiancé Mark Saunders and Miranda Joyner and her husband Will; two sisters, Gloria Lightfoot and Joann Pena; three grandsons, Bennett and Ian Thomas Joyner, and Clay Saunders; as well as a niece, several nephews, numerous cousins, extended family, and wonderful friends who she considered family.

The family will receive friends from 3 to 5 p.m. on Saturday, February 24, 2024, at Twiford Funeral Home in Manteo.
