Early voting underway; local contests listed

Primary contests are available for Democratic, Libertarian and Republican candidates in elections for president, North Carolina governor, North Carolina lt. governor, attorney general and other council of state members.
Below is a listing of primary contests for local elections.
During early voting, people who are not registered to vote may complete a same-day registration and vote.
During a partisan primary election, an unaffiliated voter may choose any one political party’s ballot or a nonpartisan ballot (if available).
Primary day is Tuesday, March 5, 2024.
Dare County
In Dare County, only the local Republican Party has primary contests.
Republicans and unaffiliated voters can cast votes for:
Board of Commissioners District 1 – incumbent Wally Overman or challenger Carson Creef.
Board of Commissioners District 2 – challenger Christian Thomas Hayman or incumbent Robert L. (Bob) Woodard Sr.
Board of Commissioners District 1 – unexpired term incumbent Bea Basnight or challenger Mike Burrus.
In Dare County, early voting is now open and is available Monday through Friday through March 1 from 8 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. and on Saturday, March 2 from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. On Hatteras Island, the polling place is the Fessenden Center Annex, 47017 Buxton Back Road in Buxton. Voters can also vote in the Dare County Administration Building, 954 Marshall C. Collins Dr. in Mante and at the Kill Devil Hills Town Hall, 102 Town Hall Drive in Kill Devil Hills.
Currituck County
In Currituck County, early voting is open and is available Monday through Friday through March 1 from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. and on Saturday, March 2 from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Early voting takes place in Courtroom C in the new courthouse at the Governmental Complex, 2801 Caratoke Highway in Currituck.
In Currituck County, only the local Republican Party has primary contests, meaning at least two people want the party’s nomination for the General Election in November:
Board of Commissioners at large: Mike Hall or Paul O’Neal
Board of Commissioners District 1: Ronda Galko or Tony Angell
Board of Commissioners District 2: incumbent Selina S. Jarvis or challenger C. Shay Ballance
Board of Commissioners District 4: Janet Williams Rose or Bryan Bass
County Register of Deeds: Natalie Roberts Twiddy or Emily Castelo
Tyrrell County
In Tyrrell County, one non-partisan election appears on Republican, Democratic, Non-Partisan and Libertarian ballots. The election to the county’s Board of Education has drawn two candidates: William Sawyer Jr. or Mike Cole.
The polling place for early voting is The Board of Elections office in the Tyrrell County Building, 403 Main St. in Columbia. Voting hours are 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday through March 1 and on Saturday, March 2 from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m.
Hyde County
In Hyde County, only the Democratic Party has a primary contest. Three people are running to represent the party in the November election.
In early voting, Democrats and Independents or Unaffiliated voters can cast votes for the county Board of Commissioners Lake Landing Township for James (Boo Boo) Topping, Tommy Loftus or Thomas Midgette.
In Hyde County, early voting is open and available Monday through Friday through March 1 from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. and on Saturday, March 2 from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Hyde County Board of Elections, 1223 Main Street in Swan Quarter. On Feb. 22 and Feb. 23, an early voting site will be available at the Ocracoke Volunteer Fire Department, 822 Irvin Garrish Hwy. in Ocracoke from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
