The Outer Banks Shag Club will be offering a series of free beginner shag dance classes at the Baum Center in Kill Devil Hills starting on March 7. Classes will be held each Thursday from 3:30 to 4:30 p.m. for six consecutive weeks.

“These classes are designed to introduce the dance and help the participant feel comfortable shagging with others at the many venues where this swing dance is enjoyed up and down the east coast,” noted the announcement of the classes.

Registration will occur when participants come to the first class. The Baum Center will have some forms to fill out as well, so arrive early on the first day.

“Coming with a dance partner is helpful; however, singles are welcome. Singles will be partnered with other singles or an Outer Banks Shag Club volunteer. Each class builds on the previous class, so blocking off these 6 consecutive Thursdays is optimal,” stated the announcement. “However, each class will begin with a review, so we should be able to help you catch up. These classes can also be a refresher or a tune up to ensure you have a solid foundation upon which to grow your dance.”

Carolina shag is the state dance of both North and South Carolina. Its steps are similar to East and West Coast swing. The Outer Banks Shag Club has been meeting, socializing and dancing in the local area since 1990. The club’s purpose is to promote and preserve the heritage of beach music and shag dancing.

“Come out, learn, dance and become more of what has been so much a part of beach history and joy of beach living,” noted the announcement.
