Dare County

Three primary races were held for Republican candidates in Dare County.

Board of Commissioners District 1: Incumbent Wally Overman was defeated by challenger Carson Creef. Creef, from Wanchese, drew 2,924 votes or 56.04% to Overman’s 2,294 votes or 43.96%. No other candidate opposes Creef in the Nov. 5 general election.

Board of Commissioners District 2: Incumbent Robert L. (Bob) Woodard Sr., of Kill Devil Hills, won over Challenger Christian Thomas Hayman. Woodard garnered 3,437 votes or 67.54% to Hayman’s 1,652 votes or 32.46%.  Woodard will face Democrat Katie Morgan, from Colington, in the general election.

Board of Commissioners District 1 unexpired term: Challenger Mike Burrus, from Wanchese, defeated incumbent Bea Basnight. Burrus gathered 2,942 votes or 55.54% to Basnight’s 2,355 votes or 44.46%. No other candidate opposes Burrus in the general election.

In the general election Nov. 5, for the Board of Commissioners District 4, Democrat Aida Havel from Salvo will face Republican Mary Ellon Ballance from Hatteras.

Also in the general election for Board of Commissioners from District 3, incumbent Republican Steve House from Southern Shores will face Democrat Dennis Zaenger from Duck.

In the general election, Board of Education District 1: Republican Justin Bateman, Wanchese, is the only candidate. This is an open seat.

Board of Education District 2: Republican Lisa E. Lloyd will face Democrat Hayley Carey. Both candidates are from Nags Head. This is an open seat.

Board of Education District 4: Democrat Heather Euler from Buxton and Republican Kenny Brite from Avon will face off for this open seat.

At Large: Incumbent Republican David Twiddy, of Manteo, will face Democrat Melissa Zehner, of Southern Shores.

Currituck County

In Currituck County, only the local Republican Party had primary contests for the party’s nomination for the Nov. 5 general election to the Board of Commissioners. Three of the four Board of Commissioners seats were open.

Board of Commissioners at large: Paul O’Neal, of Coinjock, raked in 2,966 votes or 59.06% to defeat Mike Hall, of Moyock, who brought in 2,056 or 40.94%. O’Neal will face Democrat Claywood Wilson Jr., of Moyock, in the general election.

Board of Commissioners District 1: Tony Angell, of Knotts Island, with 2,715 votes or 55.34% defeated Ronda Galko, of Corolla, with 2,191 votes or 44.66%. No other candidate opposes Angell in the general election.

Board of Commissioners District 2: Incumbent Selina S. Jarvis, of Harbinger, with 2,647 votes or 53.78% defeated challenger C. Shay Ballance, Jarvisburg, with 2,275 votes or 46.22%. No other candidate opposes Jarvis in the general election.

Board of Commissioners District 4: Janet Williams Rose defeated Bryan Bass. Rose brought in 2,550 votes or 51.38% to Bass’ 2,413 or 48.62%. Both Rose and Bass are from Moyock. No other candidate opposes Rose in the general election.

County Register of Deeds: Natalie Roberts Twiddy, of Moyock, with 2,793 votes or 55.85% defeated Emily Castelo, of Grandy, with 2,208 votes or 44.15%.

Board of Education candidates will be on the general election ballot in November 2024. The Board of Education member is a non-partisan position.

At-Large: Incumbent Jason Banks, of Coinjock, vs. Paul Beaumont, of Shawboro.

Fruitville Township: Incumbent Kelly Williams Peters, of Knotts Island, vs. Emily Crodick, of Knotts Island.

Moyock Township: Candidates are all from Moyock: Sandi Ayes, incumbent Dwan Gibbs Craft, and Zedric McKennon.

Tyrrell County

Running in the general election for the Board of Commissioners are Democrat Karen Rose Simmons, of Columbia; incumbent Democrat Nathan T. (Tommy) Everett, of Columbia; and incumbent Republican Robert Thompson. Darryl Liverman, unaffiliated, submitted petitions to be placed on the ballot. In the general election, the four candidates will vie for three open seats. Voters will be instructed to vote for one candidate.

For Register of Deeds in the general election, incumbent Democrat Gene Parisher Boger is running for office.

Appearing on all primary ballots was one non-partisan election for Tyrrell County’s Board of Education. William Sawyer Jr. received the most votes with 344 votes or 56.30%. Mike Cole received the second most votes at 157 votes or 25.70%. A write-in candidate Janie Spencer Gibbs collected 72 votes or 11.78% and miscellaneous write-ins gathered 38 votes or 6.22%.

Two seats on the Board of Education were open. Sawyer and Cole will be sworn into office in July 2024.

Hyde County

In Hyde County, the Democratic Party had a primary contest. Three people were running to for the party’s nomination in the November election. Results for the Lake Landing Township seat on the Board of Education are Democrat Thomas Midgette with 218 votes of 43.34%. Democrat James (Boo Boo) Topping corralled 191 votes or 37.97%. Democrat Tommy Loftus brought in 94 votes or 18.69%. Midgette will be on the general election ballot.

In the general election, Democrat Thomas Whitaker is running for the Fairfield Township for the Board of Commissioners. An unaffiliated petition was filed by Jeffrey Berry, who will appear on the general election ballot along with Whitaker.

Incumbent Democrat Randal Mathews is running for re-election as commissioner from the Ocracoke Township.

For the Hyde County Board of Education, for the at-large seat, Chanta Gibbs Rickard, from Fairfield and a Democrat, is running for re-election. An unaffiliated petition was filed by Edward Torres from Swan Quarter. The two candidates will be on the general election ballot for the two open at-large seats.
