Manteo, NC – Chesley Colis “Buddy” Midgett Jr. passed away on March 17, 2024, at the age of 90. A native of Roanoke Island, NC, he was born on July 10, 1933.
Buddy was a remarkable man who dedicated his life to serving others and building a successful career. As a fifth-generation member of his family to serve in the US Coast Guard, he embodied a strong sense of duty and commitment. In 1958, he became the owner of Food-A-Rama Grocery Store, a business that he nurtured and grew over the years.
Buddy was a member of various organizations and clubs, including Manteo Lodge #521 A.F. & A.M., Dare County Shrine Club, and Bethany Church of Wanchese. He was also a private pilot who loved to fly and had a passion for entrepreneurship. In addition to establishing Food-A-Rama, he opened a second location in Kitty Hawk in 1984 and owned Chesley Mall in Manteo and Kitty Hawk Plaza in Kitty Hawk.
He is survived by his daughters Jackie Parker (Harold) of Manteo, NC, and Patti Midgett (Michael) of Palm Bay, FL; son Don Royals (Norma) of Richmond Hill, GA; grandchildren Dylan Swain, Cameron Swain, Brandon Leavel (Lillie), Tabitha Collins (Darius), Axl Earhart (Jenna), Christina Paez (Juan), and Daniel Royals; and great-grandchildren Dawson, William, Wayland, and Juan.
Buddy was preceded in death by his parents, Lucille Daniels Midgett and Chesley Midgett Sr.; wife, Ruby Story Midgett; son, Eugene Midgett; sister, Jackie Rogers; and brother, Jake Midgett.
A funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. on Monday, March 25, 2024, at Bethany Church of Wanchese, followed by a private graveside committal in Cudworth Cemetery. Buddy will be dearly missed by all who knew him, but his legacy of hard work, dedication, and love for his family will endure.
