Ashley Basnight, career development coordinator at First Flight Middle School, was awarded the Outstanding Professional Award at the 2024 North Carolina Career Development Association (NCCDA) Conference held at Shaw University in Raleigh.

The award recognizes individuals with five or more years in the profession who “consistently and significantly contribute to the career development field through dedicated service to their clients or students, mentorship and support for fellow career professionals, and a commitment to staying current with new research and best practices in the field,” noted a Dare County Schools news release.

“Ashley Basnight exemplifies the essence of this award through her unwavering dedication and passion for serving all students, regardless of background, gender, ethnicity, or socioeconomic status,” the release continued. “With her extensive experience and profound commitment, Ashley has played a pivotal role in guiding students towards fulfilling educational and personal growth. Her ability to forge meaningful connections with each student she encounters is unparalleled, as she invests the time to understand their individual needs and aspirations.”

“Ashley Basnight embodies the true spirit of a dedicated career professional,” said Dr. Shannon Castillo, director of career and technical education for Dare County Schools. “Her genuine care and relentless commitment to the success of every student makes her a beacon of inspiration within our school community.”

The release noted that throughout her tenure in Dare County, Basnight has consistently gone above and beyond to support students in navigating their career paths. “Her approach is characterized by empathy, insight, and an unwavering belief in the potential of each student. Ashley’s impact extends beyond mere guidance; she fosters a sense of belonging and empowerment among her students, instilling in them the confidence to pursue their dreams,” the release continued.

“Ashley’s ability to connect with students on a personal level is truly remarkable,” stated her colleague Duke Wallin, career development coordinator at First Flight High School. “She remembers the details of each student’s journey and tailors her support accordingly, ensuring that they feel seen, heard, and valued.”
