To the Editor:

Patti, my bride of 55 years, had car trouble recently when she stopped to pick up mail form our box at the Nags Head Post Office. When she went to the desk to let them know the situation so they would not wonder about the unfamiliar car parked behind the building, a kind gentleman offered to drive her home and made a special delivery to our house. That gentleman was Gene Garrison, the retired Nags Head Postmaster, who happened to be there to buy some stamps.

We fell in love with the Outer Banks in the late 70s, built a cottage in the late 80s and prayed renters would pay for it, but did not get here to live the dream full time until November 23, 2019, at 4:31 p.m. Mr. Garrison is reason number 476 for why we believe this is the friendliest community in America.
