The North Carolina Maritime Museum on Hatteras, commonly referred to as the Graveyard of the Atlantic, will reopen to the public at 10 a.m. on May 20, 2024.

“The museum has recently undergone a major transformation, with a completely redesigned lobby and a new gallery space with state-of-the-art features and interactive elements that bring our coastal history to life,” noted the announcement of reopening.

The public reopening will include a ribbon cutting at 10 a.m. May 20 as we welcome visitors back to the museum, which has been closed since late 2022 for the renovation. Special programs and activities are scheduled that opening week. A list of programs, which will be updated as items are added, is available at graveyardoftheatlantic.com/reopening.

The museum will also operate on a new schedule: Monday-Friday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. It will be closed on Saturdays and Sundays, as well as on Nov. 28 for Thanksgiving and Dec. 24-26 for the Christmas holiday this year. There are also plans to close to the public for two weeks in January to allow staff time to work on museum projects. Admission will remain free (donations are accepted and directly support museum operations).
