Porkchop Productions’ kids theater camps will be returning to Theatre of Dare for a third season, with six separate camp sessions beginning June 17, 2024.

“We couldn’t be more excited to bring these camps back for a third year,” said Stacey Maxwell, artistic director of Porkchop Productions. “These camps have proven to be popular for kids of all ages on the Outer Banks, and this year we’ve got returning favorites and a few new camps for kids to experience.”

This year’s camp schedule is as follows:

Mask Making Mastery (June 17-21) – Participants will learn the ancient art of mask making, from silly to scary, from beautiful to bizarre. The camp culminates with a performance showcasing campers’ artistic skills.

Youth Apprentice Company #1 (June 24-28) – Campers will learn about character development, stage direction, creative movement and much more. At the end of the week, younger campers will perform fractured fairy tales for family and friends, while older campers will have a public performance of one act plays in the evening.

Prop Making and Set Design (July 8-12) – The kids will explore techniques such as paper mache, scenic painting, stenciling, distressing and more. Some of the creations will appear in Theatre of Dare’s summer stock shows.

Musical Theater Mania! (July 15-19) – Singing and dancing are the focus of this camp, which will teach campers choreography and movement, culminating in a musical performance for family and friends at the end of the week.

Special FX Makeup for the Stage (July 29-August 2) – Participants will learn to design and apply makeup like a professional, from old age to aliens, from animals to burns, blood, cuts and bruises. Each camper will receive their very own Ben Nye makeup kit to take home at the end of the camp.

Youth Apprentice Company #2 (August 5-9) – Another camp for aspiring actors will feature a whole different lineup of shows. Younger campers will once again perform fractured fairy tales for friends and family, while older participants will stage an evening performance for the public at Theatre of Dare.

Each camp will have two sessions, with kids between the ages of 6-10 from 9-11:30 a.m. and kids between the ages of 11-17 from 12-2:30 p.m. Costs for each session range between $185 and $225 per participant, depending on which session is chosen. Camp scholarships are available from the Dare County Juvenile Crime Prevention Council.
