You can call it a comedy-mystery. You can call it a Golden Girls-meets-Murder She Wrote mashup. But however you look at it, Theatre of Dare’s season finale production of Four Old Broads is a whole lot of fun for audiences.

“It’s funny, it’s a little bawdy, but it’s also got a lot of heart,” says director Mike Mazza. “These four perky and independent old broads can show us all that you’re never too old to enjoy life.”

The action all takes place at the Magnolia Place Assisted Living facility, where retired burlesque queen Beatrice Shelton (Debbie Taylor) is desperately trying to get her devout best friend Eaddy Mae Clayton (Mary Mason) to stop praying and join her on a Sassy Seniors Singles Cruise instead of trudging off to Helen, Georgia for the umpteenth time.

But there’s trouble in retirement home paradise. New resident Imogene Fletcher (Penelope Carroll) is losing her memory at a remarkably fast pace, and Beatrice suspects something sinister in the medication. Teaming up with Eaddy Mae, frumpy wallflower Maude Jenkins (Vicki Poe) and retired Elvis impersonator Sam Smith (Bert Plante), the crew sets out to outsmart new nurse Pat Jones (Alison Wurzel) and expose “the dark side” of the facility.

Four Old Broads became part of Theatre of Dare’s 33^rd season by winning the community theater’s “People’s Choice” polling last year, beating out classics like Death of a Salesman and Gaslight. Cast members say it’s the perfect way to “leave ’em laughing” at the end of the season.

“If we’re having this much fun performing, you know the audience will be having fun watching,” says Debbie Taylor, exercising her comedic chops after playing the tragic matriarch in August, Osage County earlier this year. “At its heart, it’s all about the value and the power of friendship, and that’s something people of any age can take to heart.”

A lesson that gets even better if they can enjoy some laughter while doing it.

Four Old Broads opened last week and remaining shows will be performed at 7:30 p.m. on May 2, 3 and 4, with a matinee May 5 at 2 p.m. All performances will be at Theatre of Dare in Kitty Hawk, 3848 N.
