To the Editor:

Last week’s unanimous vote by the Coastal Resources Commission to reinstate Area of Environmental Concern status for Jockey’s Ridge was very encouraging. However, I was disconcerted by the sense I got from the comments of several younger folks that they had lost confidence in governmental entities to act responsibly.

Fifty-one years ago, a then 28-year old Carolista Baum took action to protect Jockey’s Ridge, convinced that she could make a difference with state government, and, WOW, did she ever. The 20-somethings who spoke at last week’s CRC meeting did not seem to believe they could do the same. To me that is a far greater concern than the future of Jockey’s Ridge.
