Robert Bruce “Bob the Bear” Canning, age 84, of Shallotte, North Carolina passed away on Wednesday, May 15, 2024.

Bob was born November 28, 1939 in East Orange, New Jersey, son of the late Lester W. Canning and Helen Eiring Canning.  He and his family lived in New Jersey until moving North Carolina in 1986, and eventually made their home in Shallotte. He had a huge personality and enjoyed making people laugh. If he knew you, he always gave a nickname. Bob enjoyed drawing cartoons, watching Nascar, and tending his vegetable garden until his declining health. In 2012, he and his wife Joan became members of St. Luke Lutheran Church where they were active in the church.

Survivors include his wife Joan Canning of Shallotte; children, Susan Campbell and husband Tracy of Wilmington and Kurt Canning and wife Ronda of Southern Shores, North Carolina; and four grandchildren, Kelly, Noah, Jessica, and Nathan.

A memorial service will be held at two o’clock in the afternoon on Saturday, June 1, 2024 at St. Luke Lutheran Church.
