On Pocosin Lakes National Wildlife Refuge, a brood of mallard ducklings paddle behind their mother. Mallards (Anas platyrhyncos) have a long, heavy body. They are strong flyers, reaching speeds more than 50 mph. Female mallards make the classic duck quack when vocalizing, notes USFWS.
