There are many things that could be said about a man who lived well. He embraced and found joy in the simple pleasures of life: the ocean, fishing, a good meal paired with anything chocolate, keeping a well-manicured lawn with colorful flowers, and music of all genres; he was a very popular dance partner in his prime. His wittiness and fun-loving nature will truly be missed.

In addition to the precious hats Robert wore as son, brother, husband, uncle, and most notably “Grandpop,” he was a proud veteran and brave warrior to the very end, battling heart disease and other health conditions for numerous years. There was no doubt, the love he had for his family was unconditional and without expectation. He was well-loved in return, and his memory will be cherished forever.

He is survived by his loving wife of 40 years, Pattie Long Olerich; stepdaughters, Debbie Wescott of Kitty Hawk and Tammy Wescott (Mark) of Manteo; five grandchildren, Shawn (Mary), Jenna (Owen), Brett (Katlin), Todd, and Meredith (Josh); eight great-grandchildren; sister, Deb Olerich; and nieces, Haiden and Luciann.

A memorial service with military honors will be held at 3 p.m. on Thursday, July 18, 2024, at Twiford Colony Chapel in Manteo. To live stream Robert’s service, please visit www.TwifordFH.com.

In loving memory of Robert, contributions may be made to Disabled American Veterans (dav.org), an organization he deeply cherished and supported.
