Dare County Schools Superintendent John Farrelly announced Friday morning that a Dare County Schools staff member who had come in direct contact with six Manteo Elementary students has tested positive for COVID-19.

“In the spirit of being transparent, I wanted you to beware of a COVID-19 situation at Manteo Elementary School (MES),” stated the email from Farrelly. “The Dare County Health and Human Services Department and I have worked together in identifying a DCS staff member who has tested positive for COVID-19. The adult came in direct contact with six (6) MES students on a school bus.”

Farrelly went on to say the staff member and students “are being quarantined following state and local protocols.”

Keith Parker, digital communications and secondary school director for Dare County Schools, stated that all parents of the students on the bus in question were contacted.

“We were made aware of the positive test this morning around 6:45,” stated Parker. “The students on the bus were quarantined until their parents arrived to pick them up. They did not come into contact with other students or staff. At this time, we do not anticipate the need to quarantine additional individuals.”
