The surf zone forecast from the National Weather Service has for Monday, May 27 is again calling for a high risk of rip currents for all Outer Banks ocean beaches. A high risk means wind, wave and tide conditions support development of powerful or numerous rip currents along the beaches. Ocean swimming is not recommended and beachgoers are advised to stay out of the water. The strongest rip currents often occur within a couple of hours before or after low tide; today, that is around 9 a.m. and 9 p.m.

If caught in a rip current, remain calm. Don’t fight the current. Swim in a direction following the shoreline. When out of the current, swim back to shore. If tired, float or tread water until out of the rip current. If unable to escape, face the shore and call or wave for help.
