Cape Point may open in a month

While Cape Point remains temporarily closed to beach driving, the National Park Service is predicting the famed fishing spot may open in a month.

A mixed tern colony continues nesting and chick-rearing at the Point.

“Staff monitor the area daily and will restore access when possible. Based on current activity, we believe access to the tip of Cape Point will be reopened in approximately a month,” states a message from the Cape Hatteras National Seashore.

The seashore has updated access information, saying an additional tenth of a mile of access south of Ramp 44 was reopened this week. Currently, visitors can travel 0.62 miles south of the ramp toward Cape Point. The Bypass Road south of Ramp 44 was also reopened this week.

The South Beach Road parking area remains open. Pedestrian access to the beach near the parking area was expanded this week. Visitors can now walk approximately three-quarters of a mile to the east of the parking area for recreational activities.

The park will start publishing an email newsletter starting in early August.
