Shirley F. Griffin “Honey”

KILL DEVIL HILLS, NC – Shirley F. Griffin or “Honey” passed away peacefully March 29, in Chesapeake, VA. Honey was born January 12, 1942 in Asheville, NC.  She was the daughter of the late Charles H. Lanning and Mary F. Lanning.  She joins in heaven her two brothers, “Lee” Lanning and Charles Lanning.

Honey was raised in Richmond and Norfolk, VA.  Shirley attended beauty school. She was employed with Ward’s Corner Beauty Academy of Norfolk, VA. Eventually, she met and married her “Honey Bun” Marion and the two raised their family.  They  moved to Kill Devil Hills to help in the family flooring business Professional Floors, Inc of Kitty Hawk.  Shirley was key in the business, running the office, while her brothers and husband directed install-ations. She was the face of Professional Floors, Inc. for over 40 years. 

  Shirley worked almost until illness prevented it, but enjoyed her hobby, “OBX Rocks” and faithfully supported her church, Ocean View Baptist Church, includ-ing supporting the Mana ministry.  Honey’s family and friends will remember her honest, but heavy-handed love.

  Surviving Shirley Griffin is her husband of 54 years, Marion “Bun” Griffin of the Kill Devil Hills residence; one daughter, Penny G. Haywood (Scott) of Kill Devil Hills; one son, Marvin “Bobby” S. Griffin (Misty) of Kill Devil Hills; three grandchildren, Whitney L. Haywood, Bobby S. Griffin “Little Bobby”, and Hailey S. Griffin all of Kill Devil Hills; and one great-grand-child, Carter M. Collins of Kill Devil Hills, who Shirley adored as her “Love Bug”.  She is also survived by her two brothers, Virgil W. Lanning (Toni) of Southern Shores and Terry Booth of Currituck; her sister, Sherrie Lanning Manns (Darren) of Chester, VA; as well as numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, extended family members, friends, a huge part of the family- Mellissa Gamiel and her Ocean View Church Family.

  Shirley’s celebration of life will be held 11am, Monday, April 2, 2018 at Outer Banks Community Church (formerly Ocean View Baptist Church) in Kill Devil Hills. Friends and family may view one-hour prior.  Pastor James Ashe will officiate.  The committal and interment will be held 2:30pm, April 2, 2018 at Forest Lawn Cemetery in Norfolk, VA.
