Highlights from Friday night’s local football games.
Manteo 58, Columbia 27: Manteo jumped out to a 22 nothing first quarter lead against Columbia and never looked back. The Redskins ground game was dominant and proved too much for the Wildcats. Manteo improved to 1-1 on the season while Columbia drops to 0-2. Manteo next plays at home against cross county rival First Flight in the Marlin Bowl on Thursday, Aug. 30 at 7:30 p.m. Columbia travels to Northside-Pinetown on Friday, Aug. 31 in a non-conference matchup.
First Flight 47, Arcadia 20: First Flight breezed to a 47-20 win over visiting Arcadia on Friday. It was the Nighthawks first win of the season after losing their opener last week in Edenton. First Flight scored first but Arcadia battled back and at the half trailed the Nighthawks by a single point 21-20. Early in the third quarter Nigel Kyger’s five-yard touchdown run gave the Nighthawks a more comfortable lead and the momentum to dominate the remainder of the game. First Flight will next travel to Manteo on Thursday night for the annual Marlin Bowl. Both Manteo and First Flight are 1-1 on the season.
Currituck County 48, Camden County 0: A crushing second half onslaught kept the Currituck Knights at the top of their conference. The road win over Camden was the Knights second win of the early season and their 2-0 record has them tied in wins with Northeastern High School in the Northeastern Coastal Conference. Currituck County will host Hickory on Thursday, Aug. 30 at 7 p.m.
