Cortez leads First Flight swimmers

Cecilia Cortez placed second in the 100 yard backstroke and fourth in the 100 yard butterfly at Saturday’s 1A/2A NCHSAA state swimming championships to help pace her First Flight girls team to a 16th place finish.

In addition to the 32 points from Cortez, the Nighthawks picked up four points with a 15th place finish in the 200 yard freestyle relay and another four points in 400 yard freestyle relay for 15th place there.

The total of 40 team points put the Nighthawks in a tie with Chase among a field of 43 schools earning points.

“It was a great year,” said First Flight coach Robert Trivette in an email message to The Coastland Times.
