Manteo wins home golf match

Manteo High School edged out Edenton’s John A. Holmes 381-395 Wednesday to win a varsity golf match at Nags Head.
Playing at the Scottish links-style Nags Head Golf Links, Chris Neiman led the Manteo team by shooting an 89 on the 6,126 yard 18 hole course. Teammate Davin Reynolds was only a few shots behind with a 94.
“The team score was a little high today because the conditions were so rough,” explained Manteo coach Bud Hendrix. “It was not just tough, it was brutal. Not just that it was windy, because it’s always windy. Today it was cold. And that cold will go right through you.”
Hendrix said the wind chill was probably about 37 or 38 and estimated that the wind probably added 10 shots to every score.
“I was proud of the way they played,” Hendrix continued. “The win brought our record up to 5-3.”
Going into the match, Hendrix said Manteo was split with Edenton.
“They are our conference rival,” said Hendrix. “Riverside is shooting 320 and they are the 1A team to beat in the east.”
Hendrix went on to say he thought his Manteo team had done well considering their inexperience.
“We have four kids on the team that are first-year golfers and that’s tough,” said Hendrix. “And I don’t mean new high school golfers. I mean this is the first year they’ve played any golf at all.”
Hendrix said in spite of the limited experience, his players continue to improve and as a team broke 360, the combined score for the four best players, for the first time this past week.
Very much like any sport, the more playing time an athlete gets, the better the performances. With random weather patterns on the Outer Banks, consistent playing time is not always available.
“We schedule two matches a week,” explained Hendrix. “Usually a match at home and one away. A couple have been rained out and too cold for a couple, but other than that we’ve been able to get in eight matches so far.”
Manteo is scheduled to be back in action at 2 p.m. on Wednesday, April 3 in a 1-A Albemarle Athletic Conference against Edenton and Riverside at the Chowan Country Club.
