Juneteenth celebration set in Elizabeth City

The 18th Annual Juneteenth Celebration event will be held on Wednesday, June 19 at Sheep Harney Elementary School in Elizabeth City. The event is being held in conjunction with the Juneteenth National Day of Recognition. Juneteenth commemorates the June 19, 1865 announcement of the abolishment of slavery.

Among the evening’s lineup will be keynote speaker Pastor Alvin A. Georges of The Mount Peninsula, along with musical performances by Alex Holt and Free Worship and a local community choir. Doors will open at 5:30 p.m. and the celebration will begin at 6 p.m. in the auditorium. The program will be followed by dinner and fellowship in the school cafeteria.

The celebration is free and open to the public. Sheep Harney Elementary School is located at 200 West Elizabeth Street in Elizabeth City. For more information, call River City Community Development Corporation at 252-331-2925.
