Collision in Kill Devil Hills results in critical injuries

The Kill Devil Hills Police Department, Kill Devil Hills Fire Department and Dare County EMS, as well as first responders from North Carolina Highway Patrol, Kitty Hawk Police Department and Dare County Sheriff’s Office, responded to a three-vehicle collision Tuesday, July 23 in the area of East Chowan Street in Kill Devil Hills.

According to information from KDHPD, based on the investigation the collision unfolded as follows:

At approximately 4:03 p.m., Brittany Cox, 32, of Kill Devil Hills, was operating a blue 2005 Mazda passenger car and was traveling west on East Chowan Street. Cox was stopped at the stop sign at US 158 and East Chowan and attempted to cross the highway before it was safe to do so. As she attempted to cross the highway, her Mazda was struck on the driver’s side by a 2004 GMC Yukon in a “T-bone” style collision. The Yukon was traveling at approximately 50 mph at the time of impact.

The vehicles locked together and the impact caused both to veer from the northbound lanes of US 158 and cross over into the southbound lanes of US 158. A 2002 Toyota pickup truck traveling southbound then struck the Mazda on the passenger side.

Cox was trapped due to the damage to her vehicle and had to be extricated by members of the fire department using the jaws of life. She sustained critical injuries and was eventually transported to Norfolk Sentara Hospital.

The driver of the Yukon was transported to The Outer Banks Hospital for treatment of his injuries. The driver of the Toyota was evaluated at the scene.

The Mazda had side airbag deployments, the Yukon had front airbag deployment. The drivers of the Yukon and Toyota were wearing their seat belts, Cox was not.

The driver of the Yukon is a 70 year old resident of Grandy and the driver of the Toyota is a 67 year old resident of Kitty Hawk.

All lanes of US 158 were blocked for approximately one hour as life saving measures and the investigation were conducted. Charges are pending  for Cox for careless and reckless operation of a motor vehicle and possession of a controlled substance.

The lead investigator for the incident is Sgt. Rodney Rawls.
