The Eastern Surfing Association is hosting its 2019 Easterns Surfing Championship this week, September 15 to September 21, at Jennette’s Pier in Nags Head. The event is presented by The Outer Banks Visitors Bureau and Surfer Dudes.

On Sunday, Sept. 15, the Easterns started with longboard and shortboard competitions. The following groups represented the heats of that day: Ladies, Men, Women, Senior Men, Masters, Legends and Grand Legends.

Vivian Jordan won the first final of the championship. She competed in the Ladies Shortboard Final and has been surfing since she was 22. Her first ESA contest was 30 years ago and she has been competing on and off ever since.

Jordan shared the key to her high scores, which led to her win: “We came up five days early and surfed here. I’m from Myrtle Beach and the second you paddle out, you know this is a lot different than Myrtle.”

Jason Motes won his 26th East Coast title in the Senior Men final and in the Legends Shortboard finals, Charley Hajek took first place for the 13th time in the ESA Easterns. All finalists were gifted with artwork courtesy of Jamie Lynn Swim and Plak That Printing Co.
