First Flight athletes Lydia Sillies and Tyler Sylvia each qualified for the state finals with personal best performances at the Christopher Newport University High School Winter Frolic indoor track and field meet this past weekend.

Clearing 5-0 in the girls high jump, Sillies placed second behind winner Brianna Jackson (Thomas Dale HS), while Sylvia cut 10 seconds off his previous best 3200 meter time to place fourth in the boys 3200 meter run with a time of 9:52.52.

Other state qualifiers from First Flight included Warner Campbell in the boys 1600 and the boys 4 x 400 relay team of Henry Stecher, Campbell, Mason Rubendall and Max Bowlin. Also turning is a state qualifying time was the girls 4 x 400 relay team of Emma Byard, Maggie McNinch, Tatum Dermatas and Maddy Wagner.

Eric Newman was the top Currituck County finisher clearing 5-4 in the boys high jump for 25th place.

According to First Flight coach Dan Craig, there were some 2,500 athletes from 84 teams representing all divisions competing. The meet was not scored.

Because of weather concerns, Thursday’s track meet has been moved to Wednesday, December 19 at Northeastern High School in Elizabeth City.
