To the Editor:

As a resident of Southern Shores I feel compelled to write concerning the prosecuting of individuals violating laws regarding the illegal entry into Dare County as a result of the Corona pandemic. As a former county prosecutor in Geauga County, Ohio for 7 years and a county Judge for 16 years I am writing this letter to express my belief that individuals convicted of violating these laws must be sentenced to county jail for at least 20 days. A fine is simply not acceptable and makes a mockery of the reasons for which these laws were enacted.

It must be obvious to everyone that the Corona Virus is extremely serious both to people’s health and to the economy and therefore the penalty must reflect that seriousness.

The health of Dare County residents is of the utmost concern and therefore the restriction of non-residents must be rigorously enforced. Leniency cannot be tolerated. These individuals knowingly violated these laws with malice aforethought and must be severely punished.

Sincerely,

Craig S. Albert
