North Carolina Insurance Commissioner Mike Causey will be in Alleghany County Monday, August 10 to help guide residents and businesses on how to protect their property with the proper insurance coverage for natural disasters, according to a press release from the North Carolina Department of Insurance.

Most standard homeowners’ insurance policies do not cover this type of damage.  A 5.1 magnitude earthquake, centered in Sparta, caused widespread damage to homes and businesses on Sunday prompting the mayor to declare a state of emergency. Many buildings and roads in Sparta were under construction at the time the earthquake hit.

Causey will start the day at the New River Insurance Agency in Sparta and plans to tour the damage and meet with local officials afterward.
