An 18-year-old was in a coma Friday after being shot in the head Sunday night in Camden County.

According to Camden County Sheriff’s Office Lt. Joe Riggs, 19-year-old Jelin Emmanuel Files and Tristian Swartz were inside a vehicle the evening of September 20 in a private driveway in South Mills. A female passenger was in the back seat.

At some point, Files, of South Mills, was behind the wheel of a car, pulled out a gun, and shot Swartz in the head.

Before losing consciousness, Swartz told authorities the shooting was intentional. Swartz was then transported to Sentara Norfolk General Hospital, where as of Friday he remained in a coma.

Files was arrested and charged with assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill inflicting serious bodily injury. Riggs said Files entered a bond reduction request at his first appearance in court, but the judge declined the request. As of Friday, Files was still in custody under a $250,000 secured bond with an October 2 Camden County District Court date.

No reason for the shooting was given and no other case details are available.

A Facebook post advises that there will be a prayer vigil for Swartz in Chesapeake Saturday night.
