The Dare County Regional Airport was awarded $2.7 million in additional state funds to acquire land in the Runway 23, Runway Protection Zone (RPZ). The funding was part of North Carolina Board of Transportation approved state and federal grants totaling more than $9.5 million for projects at 10 North Carolina airports.

The Dare County Regional Airport funding is intended to be used to pay for fees, studies and acquisition of three parcels of land along Driftwood Drive on Roanoke Island. The parcels identified as the City Beverage, Roughton and Basnight properties are the latest in an ongoing effort by the Dare County Airport Authority to limit activity and clear obstacles on land beneath the flight approach to Runway 23.

By definition, the RPZ is intended to enhance the protection of people and property on the ground in the event an aircraft lands or crashes beyond the runway end.
