The Town of Southern Shores Planning Board continued to review town code at the February 16 meeting. Board members met to review the code definitions, removing superfluous language and adding clarity.
The board also discussed the new updates regarding North Carolina’s changes to general statutes Chapter 160D, which consolidates county and municipality ordinances related to planning, development and zoning regulations. The purpose of 160D is to make these ordinances more logical and coherent. Local governments have until July 1, 2021 to make these changes to be in compliance with the new statute.
While there is no penalty to local governments for not completing the updates by July 1, the law that will be in effect will be 160D regardless of what local ordinances say, so there is an urgency to update by the deadline.
