Red-bellied woodpeckers (Melanerpes carolinus) – like this one found on Pocosin Lakes National Wildlife Refuge – peck on trees to find insects and to hollow out space for nests.

Their tongue is about double the length of their beak and is sticky so that it can probe deep into holes and crevices and snag food.

Their diet ranges from fruits, seeds, nuts, spiders and insects, to lizards, minnows and small birds.
