Manteo boys, Camden girls track meet winners

Manteo hosted a quadrangular track and field meet May 5 with Camden, Gates and Cape Hatteras.

Manteo boys won three of the day’s four relay events to emerge a clear winner with 116 points. Camden County was a distant second with 89 points and Cape Hatteras finished third with 18.

Competition was a little closer for the girls division. Although Manteo held a 6-4 lead over Camden County in counting first place finishes, the Camden Bruins proved to have greater depth, edging out the Manteo Redskins 67-61 for the team championship. Gates County slipped into third place with 11 points and Cape Hatteras took fourth with 6.

Michael McCallum and Reid Gilreath were multiple winners for Manteo boys with McCallum capturing the discus throw and shot put while Gilreath took the two hurdle events. Christian Carrion and Dennis Gutierrez won two events each for Camden County.

Competition in the girls meet saw Jayden Bailey – who won the discus and tied a school record with her pole vault – win as one of three three double winners. Also picking up first place wins for Manteo were Jania Charity in the 100 and 200 meter sprints and Tiffany Fenz finishing out front in the 3200 and 1600 meter runs. Camden County’s Keeley Williams was the only other double winner.
