Virginia man found dead after apparently drowning on Hatteras Island

A 46-year-old Falls Church, Virginia man died in an apparent drowning at the south end of Hatteras Island Friday evening, according to a press release from Cape Hatteras National Seashore.

At 9:34 p.m. on Friday, May 28, a CHNS visitor reported finding a body floating in ocean water at the end of Pole Road, located at the south end of Hatteras Island.

Two CHNS rangers and personnel from Dare County Emergency Medical Services and Hatteras Island Rescue Squad responded to the incident.

Family members of the decedent stated that he was surf fishing prior to the water-related incident, according to the release, which also stated that ocean conditions in the area were reported to be rough.
