First Flight brings home two state track titles

First Flight boys and girls won their 4×800 meter relay races last Saturday to claim respective North Carolina High School State Track and Field Championships at the NC A&T Irwin Belk Track in Greensboro.
The boys team of Max Bowlin, Warner Campbell, Devon Coughlin and Henry Stecher cut almost 40 seconds from a previous best to finish in 8:07.89, barely five seconds short of the state record.
In girls competition, Maggie McNinch, Tatum Dermatas, Mya Salch and Maddy Wagner dropped 22 seconds off an earlier time to win their event with a 10:02.79 and Lydia Sillies placed second in the high jump to help pace Nighthawks girls earl 26 points for an eighth place team finish. Currituck County girls finished 42nd with 3 points.
North Lincoln was the overall 2A winner in both boys and girls teams, scoring team with 69 points for girls and 66 for boys. First Flight boys finished 12 with 19 points.
In 1A competition on Friday, eight of the 13 Manteo athletes competing made all state at their high school track and field meet in Greensboro.
Mekhi Bias was the top finishing Redskin taking third place in the boys 100 meter and 200 meter dashes.
Mountain Island Charter School claimed the boys team title with 91.50 points. Manteo tied with Swain County for 14th with 19 points each. Swain County won the girls state title.
