Galaxy came to call at the Dare County Board of Commissioners special meeting July 2.

Galaxy is a three year old black Labrador retriever trained as an explosive detection dog. The dog’s partner is Dare County Deputy Sheriff Sgt. George Fockler, who was assigned to staff the metal detector at the door to the Commissioners Meeting Room for the July 2 meeting.

Galaxy was trained for two and a half years to detect 21 different explosive scents. Fockler trained for a month.

In a demonstration before Dare County Board of Commissioners, Galaxy pointed to black powder in the podium in the board’s meeting room.

Galaxy’s special treat is a ball or other toy, but not food. She has a special diet to keep her in trim shape.

For demonstrations, contact Captain Greg Wilson at greg.wilson@darenc.com.
