On Alligator River National Wildlife Refuge, the growth rate of the American alligator (Alligator mississippiensis) is slow. It can take 15 or more years for a gator to reach 6 feet in length. While driving around the refuge, keep any eye on the canals, shorelines and floating logs. There have been frequent alligator sightings this year, according to USFWS.
