Manteo High School’s Flynn sisters earn all-conference cross country honors

Sisters Madison and MacKenzie Flynn both earned all-conference honors in the Northeastern Coastal Conference Cross Country Meet at Elizabeth City October 20 to help Manteo High School girls finish fourth in the overall team standings.

Clocking a personal best time of 17:35, Madison, a sophomore, finished in third place while her younger sister MacKenzie, a freshman, was ninth overall with her best ever time of 19:50.

Other scoring finishers for the girls team included Haley Heard (22:41), Juliette Scott (24:06) and Paige Reibel (27.24).

Leading the Manteo boys team to a fourth place finish was freshman Ezekiel “Zeke” Leary in 14th place, covering the 5,000 meter course with a personal best time of 17.37.

Also scoring for the Manteo Redskins with personal best times were Braden Heard with a time of 19:11, Zain Bhula (19:13), Grayson Lewis (19:14), Sam Head (20:02), Robert Head (22:59) and Noah Hinson (29.21). Place finishes were not available.

Earlier this month, on October 13, Manteo seniors Bhula, Robert Head, Heard, Hinson and Grayson Lewis were honored by fellow underclassmen teammates and coaches at the team’s only home meet of the season. Competition for the day saw First Flight High School’s Warner Campbell finish first overall with a time of 17:52 to lead his squad to a first place team finish. Currituck County was second, Camden County third, Manteo fourth, Hertford County fifth and Ocracoke High School sixth.

Kylee Dinterman from Currituck County was first overall for girls with a winning time of 19:55, but it was Camden County who claimed the team championship. First Flight finished second, Currituck was third and Manteo girls were fourth.

Athletes from Cape Hatteras, John A. Holmes, Pasquotank County and Northeastern also competed at the meet without scoring.

Next up for both Manteo cross country teams is the NCHSAA 2A East Regional Championships at the Lenoir County Fairgrounds in Kinston on Saturday, Oct 30. Boys run at 10:45 a.m. and the girls race is at 11:45 a.m. An awards ceremony is set for 1:45 p.m.
