Home run helps Currituck scoring effort

A third inning home run helped lead Currituck County High School to a 9-2 varsity baseball win over Manteo Friday night.

Playing at Barco on a chilly and windy evening, the visiting Redskins and home team Knights were on the scoreboard with one run each at the end of the first inning.

After a scoreless second inning, Manteo was able to put a man on second in the top of the third, but that was as far as he got.

With two players on base, Ethan Thomas sent the ball over the center field fence in the bottom of the third. The three-run homer gave Currituck a 4-1 lead.

Manteo scored another run in the fourth when a walk with bases loaded sent Riley Perciful to home plate, but it proved to be the final Redskin run for the night.

Already holding a slight lead, the Knights went on to score twice in the fourth, once in the fifth and added two more runs in the sixth. When Manteo was unable to get a hit in the top of the seventh, the game ended with Currituck ahead 9-2.

The April 1 win improved Currituck County to 8-3 overall and at 5-1 the Knights are tied with First Flight and Holmes for first in Northeastern Coastal 2A/3A baseball standings. Manteo is now 3-7 overall and tied with Hertford County for 7th in the eight-team conference with 0-6 records.

Manteo was scheduled to face Pasquotank County (5-3) in a home game April 5 and will then travel to Elizabeth City Friday, April 8, for a 6 p.m. away conference game at Pasquotank County. The Currituck Knights were on the road to Edenton April 5 for a conference game with Holmes (8-4) followed by a Friday, April 8 home conference game with Holmes.
