Moyock Middle School sprinter Amani Dawson won three individual events in an April 12 Albemarle Athletic Conference track and field meet at Barco to help her girls team finish second behind First Flight Middle School.

Running on the Currituck County High School track, Dawson turned in a season best :28.77 time in the 200 for a comfortable win ahead of second place First Flight sprinter Emerson Hoggard. Dawson also edged out Hoggard by a half second in the 100 and earned her third win of the day with a photo finish just one thousandth of a second ahead of First Flight’s Moira Furr in the 400 meter sprint.

Proving depth can make a difference, First Flight Middle School girls claimed the team title with 114 points, well ahead of Moyock Middle School in second with 75 points. Perquimans County girls earned third place with 49 points and Manteo Middle School was fourth with 12.

Boys competition Tuesday saw two individual double winners from Moyock help the Bulldogs finish on top in the team standings while First Flight had one double winner with its second place finish.

Well ahead of the competition, Moyock’s Rodney Smith posted comfortable wins in the 100 and 200 meter sprints, while teammate had the winning leaps in the high and long jump events.

Running out in front for First Flight, John Cardenas Salazar was the only other double winner with wins in the 800 and 1600 meter events.

Winning both relay events, Moyock boys finished first in the team standings with 100 points, First Flight was second with 64 and Manteo boys slipped into third place with 42 points and just ahead of Perquimans County’s fourth place 40 points. Cape Hatteras rounded out the field with 4 points for fifth place.
